Do It Yourself Steps
1. Draw your Favorite Cartoon onto Cardboard
Using your pencil, draw out your favorite cartoon character onto the cardboard making sure it’s nice, big and centered. If you want to have an authentic stained glass look, add geometric lines in the background around your character.
2. Glue Yarn onto Drawing
Next, trace your pencil drawing with your yarn making sure it’s securely glued in place. Don’t worry if some spots are too small and detailed to get any yarn on, you can always leave these and add the details later on with your permanent marker.
3. Cover Drawing with Aluminum Foil
Cut a piece of aluminum foil, big enough to cover your entire cardboard. Add some glue in the empty spaces between your yarn and stick on your aluminum foil, shiny side facing up.
4. Rub Yarn Against Aluminum Foil
Use your fingers to gently find and pinch around your yarn to bring your picture out. Next, gently rub your remaining stool of yarn or a cotton ball across the aluminum foil to bring out the rest of your image.
5. Tape Backside of Aluminum Edges
Once you can see your entire image, flip your aluminum covered cardboard and fold over the aluminum edges. Tape them down.
6. Color Aluminum with Permanent Markers
Now get those colorful permanent markers ready! Start coloring in your cartoon character and be sure to add lots of different colors into your background. The more colors you use the better it looks!
7. Outline Edges with Black Permanent Marker
Finally, outline all your yarn edges with a black permanent marker and add any finishing details to really make your creation stand out and look like a stained glass masterpiece! For next time, why not try experimenting with some other shapes, scenes or patterns? Instead of cartoon characters you can try drawing an abstract design or different nature inspired scenes like cats. Cats are cool.
